This conversation has always struck me. In so many stories the powers that be are blind to the danger the protagonist attempts to warn them about until it is too late. In this case the king knows it is a bad decision but he realizes that he has little power to stop this and so takes the steps he can, including telling his allies, about it, in the hopes that they will be free to do what he cant.

Should be ‘passed away’, as in the passing of a person’s life, not ‘past’ as in ‘this person exists only in the past now’.
