The claws scratching his skin is a nice detail. Really helps display the emotion and how he tries to suppress it. (Long time fan, first time commenter… lol)
Thanks. 🙂 It’s also a really good thing Sebastian is there, because while Beast has some Magic Healing Factor, there’s a limit to how much it can do, and Beast could do a lot of potential damage to himself without someone there to put the brakes on.
Yeah, I mean, Sebastian is kind of the reason that Beast is breaking down right now, but at the same time, Beast has to start working through it ~some~time, and Sebastian is a good person to have around for it.
Was the parallel with Oedipus intentional? (You almost have Beast scratching out his own eyes, as Oedipus was said to have done once he figured out he’d unwittingly committed incest).
The parallel was not intentional, no. Although Beast could certainly have done that amount of damage to himself. Sebastian was fortunately quick to respond once he saw the direction Beast’s pain was taking.
The last few pages and this one in particular have gotten me wondering about something. How old are Beast and Sebastian? I can’t remember if it said in preceding pages, though it seems like Beast’s been trapped in his castle awhile, judging by what Sebastian said was an outdated outlook on life, but still. Who’s older? Does Beast age? How old was he when this whole thing with Beatrice happened? I always thought Beast was older (though less mature) than Sebastian for some reason, but now . . . he just seems so much like a helpless child when he’s hurting that it got me wondering.
I’m not a hundred percent sure, but… *eyes them* Hm. I’d say Sebastian is about mid twenties, say around 26 or so, maybe 27. Beast was in his early twenties when he got cursed, so say 22 or 23. If Beast ages while under the spell, he does so veeeeeeerrry slowly. Beast has been cursed for around 200 years, so while in pure years Beast has almost 200 on Sebastian, in practical terms they’re not that far off from each other.
I don’t know that I’d say Beast is acting like a helpless child. Yes, he’s having a breakdown, but it’s one that’s been a long time coming, and is sorely needed. The fact that he trusts Sebastian enough to even tell him what happened back then is a really good sign.
It’s not even that Beast is immature(he’s not bratty or shallow), he just that he grew up with some different social norms (hence the bad reaction to Sebastian’s sexual orientation), and had some extremely traumatic experiences with no one to turn to. Yes, Sebastian has seen death and war, but he always had his fellow soldiers to count on, especially Dirk. Beast’s two main emotional attachments were both shattered within moments of each other, and he suffered a very deep betrayal.
I didn’t include this in the backstory because it didn’t fit, but after that night, Beast woke up. He was cursed. He’d killed everyone in the castle. There was nobody left. He went out, dug a hole (which took him the whole day), got his fiancee/sister’s burnt corpse down from the pyre, buried her, and fell asleep on top of her grave.
Beast is traumatized. The reason Sebastian had such a tough time getting Beast to trust/believe him? Beast’s uncle, and what he did.
Did Beast handle the whole curse situation badly? Yes. Did he handle it badly because he was spoiled, or taking out a petulant sense of having been wronged on random passers-by? No.
Sorry, I phrased that very badly. I didn’t mean to insult Beast at all. He’s very strong to have gone through everything he has and then to have lived with it for 200 years. I just meant that seeing him open up like this and leave himself vulnerable by revealing his past to Sebastian is a very different side of Beast from the one I’m used to seeing. He’s usually so in control of situations ( I guess that comes from being a king; it was his job to be responsible for everything, and I guess it still is since he was seeing to the land when he and Sebastian went on that horse riding trip).
What you said about his different social norms makes a lot of sense. He’s basically from a different culture and some of the friction between him and Sebastian was a culture clash thing. Again, I phrased my thoughts badly and meant no disrespect to Beast.
On another note, the image of him falling asleep on Beatrice’s grave is completely heartbreaking. I’m kind of glad that didn’t make it into the story. I’m having enough trouble with the feels as it is.
No, no, reading back over it, I may have, er, jumped the gun a bit. I apologize for the, er, rather impassioned screed up above. ^.^;;;;;;;;
Yeah, I couldn’t find any way that Beast would tell even Sebastian about that part, and it didn’t fit the flow of the story, but uf, the aftermath of that night is definitely the uppercut follow-through of the backstory’s gut-punch. (So it’s probably a good thing it didn’t make it in yep. X3 )
First thought: *cry* the feelz.
Second thought: after fighting for a week to draw a hand for a coworker, I gotta say Matix nailed those hands (no pun intended on Beast’s claws)
Third thought: ……… How has he kept his hair so silky and shiny for two hundred years? …*headdesk*
Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeast. DDD8 That’s, again, all I can say, aaaaah.
But HOMG, all the details in every single panel are absolutely amazing and just great! 8DD The tear tracks, Beast clutching his face hard enough to wound himself.
But Sebastian being there and just taking his hands and ans;dlfj;sdlfkahsof <333
Oh. So much pain, and yet this is beautiful. One can only imagine the catharsis this must be for poor Beast.
Thank you. This is healthy for Beast in the long run, but right now, oh man right now it just ~hurts~ >_>

(XD yay comments! )

Everything I said last time times a million. It is indeed a good thing that Sebastian’s there and is the man he is.

Beast is broken, but that doesn’t make him weak.
